Abu Dhabi police launch manhunt after American woman stabbed to death in mall


The suspect accused of stabbing an American teacher to death at an Abu Dhabi shopping mall has been named by US media as Dalal al Hashemi.

ABC News cited Abu Dhabi Police as saying that the suspect, dubbed the Reem Island Ghost, is a 38 year-old UAE citizen of Yemeni origin.

She was arrested on Thursday in connection with the teacher’s murder and is also accused of planting a bomb in front of an Egyptian-American doctor’s home.

Abu Dhabi police on Wednesday released a video showing the moments leading up to the stabbing of a US citizen in a mall in the UAE capital.

The 2 minute 30 second video, posted by police on YouTube, shows a suspect entering Boutique Mall in Reem Island on Monday, the day the woman was stabbed to death.

It shows the suspect, who is hidden under an abaya, black gloves and face cover (Niqab), entering the mall and leaving more than an hour and a half later.

The video comprises footage taken from security cameras in a basement car park and ground floor lobby.

The CCTV footage of the suspect, dubbed in a police statement as the Reem Island Ghost, stabbed a 37-year-old US kindergarten teacher on Monday afternoon on Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi.

The assailant, whose gender is still to be identified, fled the scene following the altercation that took place inside the washroom of a shopping mall.

The Ministry of Interior has urged the public to call 8002626 to provide any information that may help the investigation.

Abu Dhabi Police has launched a manhunt after an American woman was stabbed to death in a mall toilet on Reem Island.

The victim died after suffering fatal injuries in a fight that took place on Monday afternoon inside the ladies public toilets of Boutique Mall on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, eyewitnesses said.

The injured woman was immediately rushed to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City where she succumbed to the wounds she sustained in the attack.


Investigations are still underway to identify the suspect’s identity and gender. Witnesses reported that the culprit was fully covered wearing an abaya, black gloves and face cover (Niqab), Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement.

According to Colonel Dr. Rashid Mohammad Borshid, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Abu Dhabi Police, the victim, identified as A. B. R, 37, worked as a school teacher, was stabbed with a sharp tool, which was later confiscated by the police.

The cause of the fight that broke out in the women’s restroom remains unknown and the suspect fled the scene immediately after committing the crime.

“The police are investigating to uncover the crime’s causes and motives and to arrest the culprit,” Colonel Dr. Borshid was quoted as saying.

“The Community Police will be providing the children with shelter and other needs pending the arrival of their father (the victim’s ex-husband) from abroad. The father will be received by the Community Police, who will also cater to the needs of the victim’s family,” he added.

Colonel Dr. Rashid Mohammad Borshid condemned the hideous crime and expressed his profound regret for such an objectionable phenomenon that is alien to the Emirati society and its deep-rooted traditions. “The Abu Dhabi Police will spare no effort in order to unveil this heinous crime and bring the culprit to justice,” he stressed.
