Qatar Gulf News – Doha, Qatar, Wednesday September 14th 2016.

Qatar linked with $0.2 billion sponsorship deal for Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Qatar Investment Authority has been linked with a possible sponsorship deal with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur regarding naming rights for club’s stadium. The north London club is currently redeveloping its famed White Hart Lane ground, which will open for the start of the 2018-19 season.

The UK Times newspaper reports that club officials have opened talks with representatives from the sovereign wealth fund over a possible deal to secure naming rights for Tottenham’s home ground. The approach came from Tottenham, according to the newspaper, who have reportedly pitched a ten-year sponsorship deal to as many as 300 companies, institutions and investment vehicles. The deal would cost $0.2 billion (£152m), which would cover naming rights for the club’s new 61,000 seater stadium.

Talks “intensified” when the Qatar Airways-Barcelona FC  sponsorship agreement looked to be drawing to a close at the end of the current season, the Times said. In July this year, Qatar Airways renewed its sponsorship $38 million deal with Barcelona FC first team until the end of June 2017, which is a one-year extension to a three-deal to have the Doha-based carrier’s name on the Spanish side’s shirts.

The deal is widely expected to be taken up by e-commerce giant Amazon next season. If a deal could be completed, it would match the amount that Dubai-based Emirates paid to extend its naming rights deal in 2012 for a further five years. The late Sir Maurice Flanagan, the airline’s founding CEO, said the deal signed with Arsenal was the most successful of all the sponsorship deals the airline has done.
