On Saturday evening, world No.1 from Spain, Rafeal Nadal, lifted the coveted falcon trophy at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open for the first time. In his five previous appearances in the Doha, he has reached the final once before (in 2010) and been a doubles champion three times (in 2005 with Albert Costa and in 2009 and 2011 with Marc Lopez).
Nadal defeated France’s Gael Monfils 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2. In a tournament that saw the early losses of fellow top seeds David Ferrer, Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych and defending champion, Richard Gasquet, Nadal had to defeat Lukas Rosol, Tobias Kamke, No. 7 seed Ernests Gulbis, qualifier Peter Gojowczyk and then finally, Frenchman Monfils.
This win marks Rafa’s 61st career singles title and a strong start to the beginning of the 2014 ATP World Tour season.
