Newspapers Hail Qatar’s Contribution to Addressing Climate Change

Qatari newspapers hailed in their editorials Tuesday HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s announcement during HH’s participation in the UN Climate Action Summit 2019 yesterday that the State of Qatar will pledge an amount of $100 million for the support of small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with the climate change, natural hazards and environmental challenges.

The newspapers unanimously agreed that this serious phenomenon, as emphasized by HH, makes it incumbent upon the international community to cooperate and double efforts to confront it and reduce its repercussions, and that all states must fulfill their responsibilities and honor their commitments which international agreements have established to this effect.

For its part, Al-Arab said that HH the Amir’s participation in the UN Climate Action Summit 2019, which was held at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday, is a reflection of the State of Qatar’s full support for international institutions and bodies, led by the United Nations and its lofty goals and noble message.

The paper added that HH will also head the State’s delegation to the meetings of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly today.

The paper also referred to HH the Amir’s assertion that the State of Qatar – in the light of its National Vision 2030 – has taken many measures to develop technologies taking into consideration climate change and adoption of clean energy, through the optimal use of water in order to reduce the loss of desalinated water, encouragement of recycling and reuse of water, improving air quality, promoting the efficiency of using gas and energy, waste recycling and increasing green spaces.

It also noted what HH the Amir said that Qatar, as hosting country of FIFA World Cup 2022, is committed to organizing an environment-friendly tournament and the first “carbon neutral” tournament through the use of solar-powered stadiums and the use of cooling and lighting technology that is water and energy-saving.

The daily also noted that within the framework of Doha’s keenness to assume its role as an active partner with the international community, HH the Amir announced the State of Qatar’s contribution of an amount of $100 million for the support of small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with the climate change, natural hazards, environmental challenges and to build the capacity to counter their destructive effects.

Al-Watan newspaper noted the distinguished participation of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in the work of the United Nations General Assembly, which came in view of the distinguished global roles that HH the Amir has continued to play on the regional and global arenas.

The newspaper praised the prestigious participation of HH the Amir in the UN Climate Action Summit 2019, which was held at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday, saying that it comes to confirm the remarkable position of HH, that attracts great global attention.

Al-Watan referred to many aspects of HH the Amir’s speech about the climate change issue, as HH was keen to emphasize the important roles that Qatar has been playing in presenting international initiatives on the climate issue, pointing out that HH said that Qatar has taken many measures to “develop technologies taking into consideration climate change and adoption of clean energy, through the optimal use of water.”

In turn, Al-Sharq newspaper said that HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s announcement that the State of Qatar will pledge an amount of $100 million for the support of small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with the climate change, natural hazards, environmental challenges and to build the capacity to counter their destructive effects received wide echoes within the UN community, affirmed Qatar’s keenness to play its role as an active partner with the international community and expressed Qatar’s commitment to international conventions and agreements related to climate and its keenness to reduce the risks of climate change to the world population.

The newspaper pointed out that this partnership has been manifested through many initiatives as Qatar hosted the Doha Carbon and Energy Forum and spared no effort to ensure the success of negotiations of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015.

The paper added that as a culmination of the Qatari efforts in support of the adoption of clean energy, the State of Qatar has taken many measures to develop technologies taking into consideration climate change and adoption of clean energy and the optimal use of water in order to reduce the loss of desalinated water, in the light of Qatar National Vision 2030.

The newspaper drew attention to the third initiative announced by HH the Amir to face climate change as Qatar Sovereign Wealth Fund will promote and encourage green investments activities and adopt low-carbon economic growth, which helps realize climate goals of the Paris Agreement, support the Sustainable Development Goals and allocate investments in sustainable natural resources.

Al-Sharq concluded by saying that Qatar’s partnership with the international community will be addressed today by HH the Amir in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, as HH will affirm Qatar’s policy in supporting the UN, its lofty goals and its noble mission to consolidate international peace and security and promote a peaceful solution.
