POSEIDON MED is the first LNG bunkering project in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea led and coordinated by QENERGY Europe. It is the first Cross European Border project which aims to introduce LNG as the main fuel for the world shipping industry and develop a sufficient infrastructure network of bunkering value chain.
POSEIDON-MED is the first LNG bunkering project in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea led and is coordinated by QENERGY Europe. It is the first Cross European Border project which aims to introduce LNG as the main fuel for the world shipping industry and develop a sufficient infrastructure network of bunkering value chain.
The Projects aims to design a comprehensive value chain for the use of LNG as marine fuel, including the development of an LNG transportation, distribution, and supply network, as well as, the establishment of a well-functioning and sustainable relevant market for its demand. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is an attractive and cost efficient alternative to Marine Gas (MGO) and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) for waterborne activities that allows the establishment of an excellent tool for sustainable, financially efficient, and environmentally friendly shipping.
The POSEIDON-MED project primary focuses in the European Member States involved – Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia – and its ultimate aim is to prepare a detailed comprehensive implementation plan for the LNG Bunkering, so that LNG can be widely adopted as marine fuel for shipping operations. The Project has been designed to be developed across Adriatic and Mediterranean region.
It has a fivefold target for the establishment of a comprehensive LNG network in the East Mediterranean area, the development of a sustainable market for LNG as marine fuel, the revival of the shipping industry in the area, and the increase in fleet competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability while at the same time providing substantial environmental benefits, meeting the forthcoming stricter environmental regulations, and allowing easy compliance with the most recent EU directives.
Finally, POSEIDON-MED project has the contribution of all Mediterranean and Adriatic Port Authorities, Shipping Companies and other partners from Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia, Croatia, Qatar, UK and France and it has been approved by the European Commission (TEN-T) for co-funding under the MoS Multi- Annual work programme 2013.
