The award recognised al-Attiyah’s “lifetime achievement for the advancement of the international energy industry” and was bestowed upon him by former Lebanese prime minister Fuad Siniora. Siniora described al-Attiyah as a “statesman” who developed many institutions, particularly in the energy and industry sectors (as a minister for energy and industry), and promoted the values of governance, transparency and accountability under the visionary leadership of HH the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.

He also spoke about Qatar’s wise economic diversification policy led by HH the Emir and identifying human resource as key to sustainable growth. Qatar also succeeded in utilising its natural resources meaningfully for the progress and prosperity of its people. On the changing global energy landscape, Siniora cautioned that the US was likely to become energy-independent probably by 2020 due to shale gas discoveries.

“The demand for Middle Eastern oil and gas may be affected because of this. However, higher demand exists in fast-growing power houses such as China and India as well as other markets that are energy-hungry such as Europe,” Siniora said. Accepting the award, al-Attiyah said his success was a result of the wise policies pursued by and the leadership given by HH the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.

“I was also fortunate in having a team with me, which believed that team effort can indeed make a lot of difference. At QP, we laid a firm foundation for value-based governance and I see a team with members with utmost honesty and integrity. I am happy that I could pass on the mantle to HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, who is a very capable and highly knowledgeable person,” al-Attiyah said. In his remarks, al-Sada said Qatar’s energy industry owed a lot to al-Attiyah.

“I have worked under him for more than 20 years. I have watched him with admiration. He led a team that vigorously pursued the vision set by HH the Emir and created a solid foundation for the energy industry in Qatar. Today, Qatar Petroleum is among the 10 largest energy companies in the world. A lot of hard work for this was done by al-Attiyah,” al-Sada said.
