Developing or deploying at least 2% solar energy has been identified by the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS) Forum 2013 as one of the six grand challenges to be addressed soon.

Al-Suwaidi and Dr Zacharia announce the six grand challenges at the conclusion of the QNRS Forum 2013 yesterday.

An integrated mobility and road safety strategy, assuring cyber security, integrated health management system, efficient water reuse and desalination processes and developing human capacity are the other grand challenges. The two-day forum had focused on 12 grand challenges and shortlisted six with immediate priority.
“The recommendations regarding the grand challenges will be submitted to HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani by the end of the month,” announced Faisal M al-Suwaidi, president of research and development at Qatar Foundation at the conclusion of the forum yesterday. He was accompanied by Dr Thomas Zacharia, executive vice president.
Developing or deploying at least 2% solar energy by 2020 was an objective stated by HH the Emir during the COP18 meeting in Qatar last year.
“We will now do some studies around these challenges and see which one we should work on first, based on capacity, needs and impact. These are three important criteria for us to prioritise the challenges,” al-Suwaidi explained.
Referring to the collaboration with New York Academy of Sciences, the QF official said it had done a great job in setting the priorities from a number of challenges. “We have established a very good partnership,” he said.
The six shortlisted challenges will involve many of the 76 objectives identified earlier. “By reducing the number of objectives, we will be more focused. Anything that is not covered by the six challenges from the 76 will not be forgotten. They will still be addressed. Now we have the immediate set of priorities.”
The official also said that the prioritised challenges are all what Qatar needed to address soon. “We need to be clear about ourselves about the capacity or the expertise or the interest of the stakeholders to undertake the challenges. We need to address the challenges that will bring immediate impact,” he added.
