During a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Conference hosted by the Ministry of Business and Trade, Qatar Shell announced two new developments associated with TAFAWOQ, a Project Management Centre of Excellence established in 2012 in partnership with Qatar Petroleum and Hamad bin Khalifa University.
TAFAWOQ, meaning ‘excellence’ in Arabic, aims to develop the competencies of project management professionals to help them deliver Qatar’s extraordinary capital investment projects. With one of the most ambitious national development programmes in the world, Qatar is expected to spend more than USD $250 billion in capital investment projects over the next decade.
In the first development, TAFAWOQ will expand its competency development programme this year to offer new courses to aspiring project management professionals. The new courses include: Contributing to Projects; Essentials of Project Management; Essentials of Project Services; Managing Project Execution & Start-up; and, Managing Opportunity & Project Risk.
In a second development, Qatar Shell revealed that TAFAWOQ will relocate to new premises within Education City later this year.
TAFAWOQ builds on Shell’s Project Academy and Qatar Petroleum’s extensive experience in building large scale capital projects. These skills not only relate to the energy sector, but to other national infrastructure projects which are crucial to Qatar’s development. In 2011, Shell and Qatar Petroleum successfully completed Pearl GTL, the world’s largest and most complex gas-to-liquids plant.
Speaking at the Ministry of Business and Trade’s Fourth Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility, TAFAWOQ’s Operations Manager Bader Al-Jaidah stated, “The successful completion of Pearl GLT was made possible by the high quality of our key project management staff, which was a result of the competency development programme implemented by Shell Project Academy. Together with Qatar Petroleum, our partner in the realization of Pearl GTL, we recognized an opportunity to make the knowledge and best practices developed by Shell Project Academy for delivering world-scale complex projects available to Qatar, growing the competency of project management professionals. This will help enable the successful delivery of Qatar’s extraordinary National Development Programme.”
In announcing the new home for TAFAWOQ in Education City, Al Jaidah expressed his excitement, “I am thrilled and honoured to announce that, having welcomed and partnered with Hamad Bin Khalifa University last October – headed by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, President of HBKU and under the inspiring leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser – TAFAWOQ now has a permanent home located in the main hub of Qatar’s world-class education center.”
Al-Jaidah explained to conference attendees that TAFAWOQ was born from a deep-rooted commitment at Qatar Shell to a holistic approach to CSR that bears fruit to material and measurable impacts for Qataris and Qatari society. “At Qatar Shell we are committed to adding value in the areas of our expertise – technology and innovation – for the development of the State of Qatar, and we seek to be the leading example of Qatarization in the oil and gas industry through the development of both current and potential Qatari employees and project managers,” Al Jaidah added.
The CSR conference, held under the theme ‘Deepening of responsible practices in the business community’ took place at the Four Seasons Hotel on May 28 and 29. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Business and Trade, the ministry continues to host this conference in order to stimulate and deepen the culture of social responsibility in the business sector in Qatar and to promote best practices in the business community in the country.
