As part of the Qatar Total Open 2013, being held through February 17th at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Paris Saint-Germain congratulates new World No.1 Serena Williams.
Williams’ defeat of Petra Kvitova in Friday night’s quarterfinal guarantees her spot as the new world No. 1 when the rankings are released on Monday. For this occasion, she received a personalized Paris Saint-Germain jersey from club President, Nasser Ghanim Al Khelaifi.
Serena Williams, playing in her first Qatar Total Open, reclaims the world No. 1 WTA ranking with her quarterfinal win over Petra Kvitova on Friday. Williams has spent a total of 123 non–consecutive weeks as No. 1. She first ascended to No. 1 on July 8, 2002 (the 12th woman to do so) and was last ranked No. 1 on October 10, 2010.
Williams has 15 Grand Slam singles titles, the most of any active player, and 6th all-time. She became the 5th woman in history to hold all four titles simultaneously at the 2003 Australian Open.. She has also won the WTA Championships three times (2001, 2009 and 2012) and was runner-up in 2002 and 2004.
She has been a member of the US Fed Cup team in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2012. She has also been a member of Team USA at the Olympics Games in 2000, 2008 and 2012. She won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics Games and has won doubles gold (along with sister, Venus) at all three Olympics Games they have played in – becoming the first tennis player in history to win four Olympics gold medals.
Williams is coached by her father, Richard Williams, and mother, Oracene Price. She owns Aneres, a fashion design label. She began playing tennis at age five at the public court in Compton, California. She has won the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award three times (2002, 2009 and 2010).
