Qatar Petroleum International (QPI) chief executive officer Nasser al-Jaidah has highlighted the important role natural gas plays in the UK energy market and how it helps the UK government achieve its aims of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and maintaining energy security cost-effectively.

He also emphasised the partnership between the UK and Qatar as well as QPI’s long-term commitment to the UK energy market through its investments in South Hook Gas, South Hook LNG Terminal and the potential Combined Heat & Power plant project, South Hook CHP.

Al-Jaidah was one of the key speakers at the Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies (PGES) summer reception in London sponsored by South Hook Gas Company and held at the UK Houses of Parliament.

Around 130 people were in attendance including a number of British lords, ladies and members of Parliament. Stephen Lovegrove, permanent secretary at the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, also spoke.

The reception was hosted by the chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies, Ian Liddell-Grainger, also MP for Bridgwater and Somerset.

Liddell-Grainger said: “The Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies has a 33-year history in reaching out across the energy industry, Parliament and the civil service through speaker meetings, energy focus and events such as the annual reception. We could not do this without the generous support of active and informed members, such as South Hook Gas, who contribute hugely not only through their generous sponsorship of the annual reception, but also their informed, intelligent and constructive insights to the energy debate.”

Rashid al-Marri, director and general manager of South Hook Gas, said: “The UK energy market is undergoing a period of considerable change making the need for regular dialogue between industry and government ever more essential. We have been a member of the Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies for some years and were delighted to be able to offer our support to such an important group.”

South Hook Gas has supplied gas every day into the UK market since commencing operations in 2009, helping improve security of supply. Since then, the company has grown rapidly to become the largest UK importer of LNG with capacity to supply around 20% of the UK’s gas needs.
