Qatar yesterday pledged to invest up to 1bn euros ($1.34bn) in Greek companies, money which could help Greece recover from its debt crisis.
The agreement was reached during a visit by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who was accompanied by his development and defence ministers and a team of Greek business leaders.
Prime Minister and Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani announced that the State of Qatar and the Republic of Greece, signed today several cooperation agreements between the two countries the most important of which is the agreement to establish a joint fund to invest in small and medium industries in Greece.
This came in a joint press conference HE the Premier and Foreign Minister held evening with visiting Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said:
We want to match the Agreement for establishing the Fund with what we have done with Italy a few months ago where we had agreed with them to create a joint fund with a capital of two billion euros equally between the two countries.
HE the Premier and Foreign Minister added in this regard:
We do not mind that we match that figure with the new fund as long as there is capacity and a project at this level.
Qatar has expressed desire to contribute and participate in investment in Greece, where the two sides had studied several agreements and projects which will have a specific timetable in order to reach results that satisfies both parties, HE the Premier and Foreign Minister noted. HE the Premier and Foreign Minister referred to the several visits by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani to Greece as well as his visits personally to Greece as part of the desire and efforts of both countries to develop and strengthen cooperation between them in various fields.
We have found new thinking in Greece and cooperation with this new thinking indicates the presence of strong intention by the Greek government to deal with the State of Qatar in investment issues, HE the Premier and Foreign Minister said.
HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras praised the close bilateral relations between the two countries, and expressed their desire to develop them in various fields, especially in the investment domains. They also stressed that the talks that took place between them today were fruitful and included the overall relations between the two countries, especially in the investment spheres.
The current visit of Mr. Antonis Samaras to Qatar falls within the framework of these relations, HE the Premier and Foreign Minister added. He pointed out that both the Qatari and Greek sides discussed several specific projects related to roads, electricity, energy, and tourism sectors, while the Greek side had proposed specific ideas that would be considered by the Qatari side, he said noting in this context that a Qatari delegation will travel to Athens next month to meet with Greek counterparts to discuss these issues. For his part, the Greek Prime Minister lauded the distinguished relations between the two countries and commended the outcome of the talks he had held today with HE Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He said that HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani will meet him and his accompanying delegation tomorrow to discuss bilateral issues and other topics of interest to the two countries.
He said the agreement of establishing the Qatari -Greek Investment Fund is important for his country, calling on businessmen in the two countries to contribute to promoting this investment relations and the close ties of friendship between the two countries in order to achieve their ambitions in this area. He added that “Greece comes today from a great dramatic economic crisis and has become stronger and more credible body among its neighbors in the Middle East and its European partners” .. Considering it an important factor for his country.
The Greek Prime Minister also praised the role played by the State of Qatar for realizing stability in the region .. He expressed hope that the level of political relations between the two countries would be further developed, especially since there are a lot of matters in common between them. He added that the results of his visit to Qatar will strengthen the close ties between the two countries and at the same time will be a useful and productive start to a new phase of constructive cooperation between Doha and Athens.
