QATAR: PM opens GIS world conference

HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani opened on Monday, at Qatar National Conference Centre (QNCC) , the Second World Conference of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
In his keynote speech he delivered before the GIS participants, HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister stressed the importance of the conference, saying that holding it in the State of Qatar is the subject of welcome and pride, especially since it involves all concerned governmental and semi-governmental parties as well as private sector, civil society organizations and other relevant institutions.
He noted that holding such key global conferences benefitting humanity and contributing to advancing the development and progress in all parts of the world, is fully consistent with the vision of the State of Qatar under the leadership of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir, adding that this vision transcends borders and barriers and is based on sound planning and well-studied programs aiming for world peace and stability.

HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani pointed in his speech that the importance of this conference comes in this period while some countries and regions in the world are experiencing a number of social, economic, environmental and political challenges and other difficulties that adversely affect their growth and development as well as their neighbors’. “This makes it imperative to join efforts in order to face these challenges”, said HE the Premier and Foreign Minister. The Qatari senior official further said in this context that there is no doubt, that the strength and importance of the information to make the right and accurate decision is essential for the march of progress and prosperity.

HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister pointed out that this conference is held at a time when “we desperately need to combined all efforts and initiatives from around the world to set a roadmap that leads to achieving the aspired goals. “Through the exchange of experiences and the involvement of others in reviewing the  lessons learned, it will be easier to face the challenges in a scientific manner”, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani told the attendants. ​

HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani explained in his opening speech that  the important themes and topics that  will be discussed during  this conference have become possible after several tests and stages that  have had adverse effects and poses  through which paths were corrected and benefited from. At the end of the day, these should be taken into account in the in the formulation of the next steps and strategies and implementation programmes in a realistic way while taking into consideration all the circumstances that surround our world, Sheikh Hamad said.

He added that we should not lose sight of the conditions of developing countries that are in need of support and assistance from all of us in order to help them get developed  according to the priorities in these countries and should provide data and geographic information that may be someday in need of to control more effectively the various negative phenomena that require advance planning and an abundance of information in order to reduce their effects to ensure  security and safety.

HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said in his speech that the recommendations and outputs the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20), which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012, came as a foundation stone for way and  mechanism to reduce poverty and ways to promote social justice and environmental protection on our planet which has been suffering steadily from pollution and scarcity of resources which requires on us to work together and develop well thought out long-term plans within the system of caring for the environment and conservation of natural resources.

Concluding, HE the Prime Minister expressed the hope that the conference would come out with studied recommendations and programmes in which everyone should participate and work to implement within  the priorities required by the public interest while taking into consideration all the circumstances and phenomena surrounding us, in completion of our earnest efforts to build a bright future within a reality surrounded by many difficulties and challenges.

After the opening session, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani opened the exhibition held on the sidelines of the Conference in which 10 organizations applying the state-of-the-art application of these systems.
HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister listened to a thorough briefing on the modern and advanced technologies applied in this field at the international level. The three day conference in  held at Qatar National Conference Centre in conjunction with the United Nations.

The conference is one of the important conferences which involve world countries, and deals with coordination between the participating countries to develop a mechanism to create a geographic information database of world countries to provide all information and data about  each state, including statistical and geographical information.
