QATAR: World Innovation Summit For Education (WISE) will announce the 2013 WISE Awards finalists…

World Innovation Summit For Education (WISE) will announce the 2013 WISE Awards finalists next week. The announcement will be made during the annual conference of British Council, Going Global, to be held in the UK on June 4. The list of finalists will be posted on the WISE website.

WISE has teamed up with Going Global, a conference for the world’s higher education leaders, to co-host a debate on the theme, “Future Models of Learning: Will the teaching profession as we have known it become obsolete?”. The debate will take place at University of Salford in Manchester. Later this year, a jury of leading individuals from the field of education will select the six WISE Awards-winning projects. The WISE Awards will be celebrated at a special ceremony during the WISE Summit, to be held in Doha from October 29 to 31.

Since 2009, the WISE Awards have identified and promoted innovative projects in education that have a transformative impact on societies around the world. They represent a growing resource of expertise and sound educational practice. The debate will focus on the aspect that technological innovation is creating new methods of education, expanding access and democratising knowledge at a great pace. This poses challenging questions that need to be answered according to the present demands.

The debate will be in the classical format with three speakers for the motion and three against. Each will have seven minutes to present his/her case;  the chair will then invite questions from the floor. The audience will be invited to vote for or against the motion. Dale Stephens, founder of the UnCollege movement; Sugata Mitra, educational researcher and Newcastle University professor; and Daniel Stevens, NUS International Students’ Officer, will speak for the motion.

Prof Martin Hall, vice-chancellor of University of Salford; Pamela Wright, executive headteacher at Wade Deacon High School; and  Mohamed Bilal, WISE Learners’ Voice, will speak against the motion.
